The Bible tells us that when a man or woman is double-minded and lacks the ability to make swift decisions, he or she will be unstable in all that they do. When you are unstable in all that you do, the sure outcomes are mediocrity, problems, disappointments and the inability to achieve your goals/heart desires.
If you, therefore, suffer from indecisiveness, then there is an urgent need for you to be conscious of it and eliminate or minimize it in your life. For when you master the ability to make your own decisions, then it will serve to have a positive impact on all aspects of your life.
We currently live in a world that requires us to make countless decisions on a daily basis. From the moment we wake up, we have to make a decision on what cloth/shoe to wear, what to eat or cook for the day, what items to buy when shopping, which of the 100+ TV channels to watch, which car to buy, where to rent or buy a house, who do you choose to be your life partner, which college to attend, which profession to go into, which church/branch to worship, which function or department within your church do you join , etc. It is therefore important that we improve and master our ability to make our own decisions in order to have a productive life.
The Effects of Being Indecisive
When you are indecisive, in most cases you tend to have doubt in your mind which then prevents you from being able to make your own decision.
1 Kings 18:21 says, “”Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing.” The Israelites were indecisive as to whether they should serve God or Baal and Elijah had to perform the miracle of commanding fire from heaven to burn the offered sacrifice. The main reason why they could not make a decision was due to the fact that the Israelites did not have faith and doubted the power of God.
Just like the Israelites in the days of Elijah, some Christians also face the same indecisiveness and doubt when it comes to serving God. Sometimes, some Christians doubt the ability for God to answer their prayers directly. Hence, instead of praying directly to God or working with their pastor, they become indecisive and seek multiple pastors/prophets to also do prayers for them.
Loss of Self Confidence
When you are indecisive, you tend to eventually lose or diminish your self-confidence and develop self-doubt. This is because your lack of being decisive forces you to constantly get other people to make decisions for you by seeking their opinion and approval. Seeking approval from outside instead of from within will eventually drown your own inner voice. Which then leads to living a life based on other people’s expectations instead of your own.
We tend to naturally develop stress when we fail or struggle to make a decision. This is because our lack to make a decision on whatever we need to decide on tend to linger, it then becomes a bother, then graduates into worry, then to fear and finally becomes stress.
When we fail to make a decision on a situation at hand, we tend to postpone the act of making that decision to another date. This is because we don’t want to deal with the situation at hand and thereby opt to postpone the act of making the decision. This develops procrastination in our lives and leads to lost opportunities, time and create more problems.
It is of utmost importance that we all learn to become decisive in all situations that require us to make a decision. For in most cases, we are not even conscious of the fact that we are indecisive on the less important day to day decisions that we are required to make. Hence, when the big decisions that impact our lives arise, our lack of being able to make swift conscious decisions tend to put us at a disadvantage.
We, therefore, need to start by ensuring that we are consciously decisive on the daily decisions that we need to take in order to enable us to effectively make swift decisions in those important situations that have a big impact on our lives. For being decisive will grow your confidence, take away stress, eliminate doubt and procrastination to enable you to live a productive and a prosperous life.
We are all leaders in the management of our respective lives, in our families, our churches, place of work/business, schools and the society as a whole. Being decisive is, therefore, a must to enable you to have the singleness of mind, stable in everything that you do, and become a successful leader.
I, therefore, leave you with this quote from Grantland Rice which says, “A wise man makes his own decisions, an ignorant man follows the public opinion.”
